In labor, fear (and the stress that is created as a result) can produce hormones called catecholamines, that can interfere with labor. Think about it: when you're afraid, you're tense. When you're tense, things hurt more. Then, you become afraid of the pain which leads you into the Fear, Tension, Pain cycle.
